How to have time for yourself after being a mother

7 Outubro, 2019

5 easy-to-apply tips that will make a difference in your daily life.

If you were a mother recently you have discovered how absorbing it is and at times strenuous caring for a newborn 24 over 24 hours.

Our body is adapting to yet another change, we have completely unregulated hormones and we feel we have to respond to (almost) everything with maximum efficiency. There is a baby in need of constant care and life goes on happening. It is rarely possible to press the “pause” button to care only for you and your baby.

Still, for everyone’s sake, it is very important that the new mom find times to take care of herself.

With that in mind, we bring you 5 tips that, being easy to put into practice even by a new mom, can really make a difference in how you live your new day to day life.

1. Self massage

If you don’t have time to go to a spa, spend a few minutes at the end of the day doing a self-massage. As the father takes care of the baby, choose a cream he likes with a relaxing scent, put on some quiet music and spread the cream on his arms, hands, feet and legs in a circular motion toward his heart.

2. Take a walk

Enjoy the good weather and take a walk. If you have no one to leave the baby with, you can take it with you. Ideally, spend time with yourself, but the important thing is to do something that gives you pleasure, so simplify. Babies are very fond of the outdoors and usually sleep more and better when they walk outside for a while during the day.

3. Lengthen

Walking with a baby for a long time, getting up and down to put on and off the crib, breastfeeding… can all compromise good body posture. Therefore, upon waking up and before going to bed, do some stretching exercises accompanied by deep and quiet breathing. Your muscles and spine thank you.

4. Take a shower

On more challenging days, it may seem to you that you didn’t even have time to bathe. A warm bath with salts or essential oils may be enough to make you feel better at the end of a long day.

5. Write

Keeping a journal of how you feel and everything you have to deal with will help you relativize and gain clarity about the emotional roller coaster you go through on certain days. If you wish, you can also include the practice of gratitude, recording every day 3 or 4 aspects of your life for which you are grateful. This practice has been proven to increase welfare levels.

As you can see, all of these tips are easy to implement and it’s up to you to get started today. If you still feel exhausted and overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to ask for help. To the baby’s father, grandparents, a friend or professionals if necessary. Don’t deprive yourself of putting yourself first. Doing so in the simplest things of everyday life will make you feel better about yourself and those around you, and you will be more excited to take care of your baby as it deserves.
